Roofing Repairs

 

Over the years, the roofing industry has seen a change in the type of materials commonly used in roofing.  Tar paper on flat roofs is a thing of the past now, although asphalt is still used as is concrete, which has been used since Babylonian times.  In recent years, felts have been the most commonly used material for flat roofs.  However, with age, felts become crumbly; this worsens the more insulation is used under them.  Extreme temperatures heighten the brittle quality of felts, so the high, intense heat of strong sunlight or the bitter cold is especially hard on felt roofing.  Adding polymers to the felt solved some of these issues.  However, the industry is always on the lookout for newer, better materials.  Recently, the industry has had a thing about fibreglass.  Fibreglass is strong and tough; however, the type of fibreglass used on boats does not have to stand up to the sun and the cold as it would need to if used on a roof.  Again, experimentation and innovation by the roofing industry has led to new types of fibreglass which are more suitable for use on roofs.  Another advantage of fibreglass is that when painted, it can look like lead, but has no value when resold, making it much less attractive to thieves wanting to sell it on to scrap metal dealers.
